Triangles Placemat Project

These might become dust catchers in a full size quilt, but for a set of placemats, pillow or a wall hanging they are just perfect. Mix and match prints to match your favorite china. Try these triangles out and share the idea with friends.

Materials for Two Placemats:
Pastel Strips to match your china and contrasting rectangles:
Row A-Cut 2 prints 4" x 1 ½" and 14" x 1 ½"     Flying Geese cut 2 rectangles 1 ½" x 2 ½"
Row B-Cut 2 prints  4" x 2"     and 14" x 2"         Flying Geese cut two rectangles 2" x  3 ½"
Row C-Cut 2 prints  4" 2 ½"   and 14" x 2 ½"     Flying Geese cut two rectangles 2 ½" x 4 ½"
Row D-Cut 2 prints 4" x 3"     and 14" x 3"          Flying Geese cut two rectangles 3" x 5 ½"
Row E-Cut 2 prints  4" x 3 ½" and 14" x 3 ½"     Flying Geese cut two rectangles 3 ½" x 6 ½"
Row F-Cut 2 prints  4" x 4"     and 14" x 4"          Flying Geese cut two rectangles 4" x 7 ½"
 Cut two linings and battings 14" x 17 ½"
20" square of print fabric cut into 2 ½" wide bias strips for bindingplacemat #1

Method:
1-With strips cut for each row, start with row A. Fold the contrasting rectangles in half, bringing the short sides together. (Figure 1) Position the raw edges in the connecting seam of the companion cut strips. (Figure 2) Place the fold ¼" down from the top. (Figure 3) Fold and pin all five rectangles in between the strips. Stitch each row together a la "kite" style, one right after the other in a sequence. Cut each strip apart: press the seam allowance open to relieve any bulk. On the front side, pull the corners into a 45 degree angle toward the base, creating dimensional flying geese. 2-Stitch the 6 rows together with the Flying Geese points going upward with the narrow bands at the top. Press the seam allowances in the same direction. Repeat steps 1 & 2 for second placemat.

3-Layer the lining or backing with wrong side up, cotton batting and decorative placemat top on the top layer. Baste in place and stitch in the ditch across the seam lines. Add any other decorative stitches to keep the layers in place.

4-Connect bias cut binding into one long piece. Press in half with raw edges on the outside. Sew around all sides of placemats and finish loose ends. Roll over to the backside and hand stitch in place.

Use the accent open triangle sides for the placement of silver ware.
